WHEATFIELD
SOUL
POWER
Guess
Who's
Home
Various
Artists
Transistor
66 /
Festival
STYLE: Wheatfield soul power.
SOUNDS LIKE: A bunch of homegrown boys and girls singin'
another prairie tune.
POINTED COMMENTS: Could there be a more perfect Guess Who
tribute
disc than this 18-song set of Cummings
and Bachman
classics revamped and updated
by a
varied cast of hometown artists? From
The Perpetrators'
sizzling opener Hang on
to Your
Life to Joey Gregorash's closing
live
version of Shakin' All Over, this is
a blast.
And a must-have for any Guess Who
fan.
Maybe someone should send one to the
Juno
organizers. Then again, never mind.
They
probably wouldn't listen to it, anyway.
STAND-OUT:
Almost all these tracks are memorable,
but the
D. Rangers' rootsy rejigging of Runnin'
Back
to Saskatoon, Scott Nolan's thundering
Guns
Guns Guns, Mitch Funk and The Fabulous
Kildonans'
punkified Bus Rider and The Rowdymen's
country-honkin'
Clap For the Wolfman are
unforgettable.

On most tribute albums the artists get all
pretentious and pick the most obscure tracks
they can think of, just to be clever and
show off. "Guess Who's Home, "
is not most tribute albums, the 18 artists
have selected the song they dig the most,
just to kick out the jams. More than a tribute,
it's a Guess Who party in a box! And it only
gets better, with every artist making the
song their own while staying true to the
spirit of the 'Peg's most legendary band.
The songs are equally identifyable as a Dust
Rhino (or Barrymores or Fabulous Kildonans
or...) number as they are Guess Who hits!
So if you are a fan of the local music, and
you should be, it's a great compilation of
some of the best artists this amazing scene
has to offer, or if you're a fan of the Guess
Who, this is a fresh take, or 18, on some
of your favourite tunes. The album is all
about the passion: the passion of bands playing
their favourite songs, the passion of hearing
your favourite songs in a new light, and
the passion that Transistor 66 label guru
Art MacIntyre has for local music, past and
present. But it all boils down to this, "Guess
Who's Home" is flat-out, a great album,
start to finish. It's the first tribute album
that warrants a sequel.

-- A Tribute (Transistor
66/Festival)
In a
city
where
St. Randy and St. Burton
have
long
been
deified, musicians pay tribute
to The
Guess
Who every
day. But that didn't
stop
18 Winnipeg
rock
and roots outfits from
putting
their
own spin
on classic tunes by
the city's
most
celebrated
rock band.
The lineup
includes
luminaries
like bluesman
Big Dave
McLean,
his protegés
The Perpetrators
and Sham
Allen
And The
Dispersions, an impromptu
act featuring
Joey
Gregorash
on vocals and
band
biographer
John
Einarson on guitar.
But like
all tribute
albums,
the most interesting
covers
are the
ones
that depart most from
the original
source
material,
like The D.
Rangers
bluegrass
Runnin'
Back To Saskatoon,
The Dust
Rhinos'
Celtic
Share The Land, Romi
Mayes'
solo
acoustic
Hand Me Down World and
a raunchy,
ska-rock
No Sugar
Tonight by The
Barrymores.
For the
ironically
inclined,
there's establishment-hating
P.J.
Burton
leading
his Chocolate Bunnies
From
Hell
through
an almost reverent No Time.
The icing
on the
cake:
local punk legend
Mitch
Funk
joining
The Fabulous Kildonans
for Bus
Rider.
Is it all Burtonalicious? Hell, no. But it's
a slice of Winnipeg-centrism you don't want
to miss.

MIGHTY BIG SPECTRUM OF GENRES
Guess
Who’s
Home
is an
18 song tribute to
the band
that
Rolling Stone called “One of rock’s most consistently
fascinating
maverick
bands.”
What we’ve got here is a true testament to
the incredible song writing of The Guess Who. Not only do their songs stand the test
of time, they also withstand treatments,
and flourish, in a mighty big spectrum of
genres.
